Plant spotlight: Nematanthus albus
This beauty has a few buds opened every few weeks threw out most of the year. Right now though, it's covered in them! I counted 15 opened with many more on the way.
Plant Profile:
Nematanthus albus has dark, velvety reddish leaves, and produces large white bell shaped flowers with spotted throats. The blooms have a slightly unpleasant lemony fragrance. (I don't mind the smell but my husband won't even walk into the kitchen while its in bloom)
It is a member of the Gesneriad family, and so is related to African violets and Gloxinia.
Like its better known cousins, it prefers light to dappled shade and lots of water, without being saturated.
It's really easy to propagate. I've started cuttings both in water, and just stuck in moist substrate. Both techniques worked very well.
